Manchester United Set to Sign Alvaro Fernandez
Manchester
United are set to sign Real Madrid teenager Alvaro Fernandez on a four-year
deal.
Fernandez is
a free agent after failing to agree an extension on his deal at the Bernabeu,
which expired on June 30, and now the promising left-back will make the switch
to Old Trafford this summer.
The
17-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2017 from his native Deportivo La Coruna and
has played at Under-15, 16 and 17 level in Los Blancos' youth ranks over his
three year stay in the Spanish capital.
The move
to United could offer Fernandez a faster route to first-team football
than staying in Madrid would, though it's expected that he will initially play
for United's youth sides and is viewed as a prospect for the future.
However, he
could potentially be drafted into first team training on occasions if United
are suffering with injuries, similar to how Ethan Laird and Teden Mengi have
been given opportunities to train with the seniors in recent weeks.
Fernandez is
not the only full-back from a prestigious Spanish club United are looking to
sign this summer, either, with 16-year-old Marc Jurado also expected to
make the move to the North West after leaving confirming his departure
from Barcelona.
United's
academy has already had a busy summer of recruitment and has also brought in
16-year-old striker Joe Hugill from Sunderland.
