‘America is Back’Says Joe Biden
President-elect
Joe Biden announced ‘America is back’ as he nominated his new cabinet to take
over from President Trump’s administration.
Biden
unveiled his top team in Wilmington, Delaware, on Tuesday including John Kerry
as the first ever US secretary for climate change.
Kerry’s
official title is special presidential envoy for climate, with Biden saying his
appointment was aimed at tackling ‘one of the most pressing threats of our
time.’
If confirmed by the US Senate, his appointment
will be a marked departure from the Trump administration.
The current
president and his team pulled the United States out of the 2015 Paris Accord
aimed at combating climate change after claiming it was a bad deal for America.
Biden, who will be inaugurated as president in
January, said: ‘America is back, multilateralism is back, diplomacy is back.’
Others
introduced by Biden on Tuesday include new director of national intelligence
Avril Haines, and prospective secretary of state Anthony Blinken.
Blinken took
an apparent swipe at President Trump’s alleged fondness for surrounding himself
with ‘yes’ men and women, saying of his cabinet colleagues: ‘They will tell me
what I need to know, not what I want to know.
‘They will
make us proud to be American.’ Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris
went on to name Linda Thomas-Greenfield as ambassador to the UN, Alejandro
Mayorka as incoming secretary of homeland security, and Jake Sullivan as
national security adviser.
Explaining
their choices, Harris said: ‘They are, to a person, the right women and men for
these crucial positions…to be focused on one thing, and one thing alone, doing
what is best for the people of the United States of America.’
