Bloody Night In Anambra As Unknown Gunmen Attack INEC Secretariat, Police Division
It was
another bloody night in Akwa, Anambra State as unknown gunmen Sunday evening
attacked B Division of the police divisional station and the Independent
National Electoral Commission in Akwa, Anambra.
According to
some eyewitnesses, the armed attackers came in three Hilux trucks at about 8:00
p.m. on Sunday.
An witness
who almost ran into the troubled area located between the popular Ekwueme
Square in Awka said the gunmen shot into the air close to one hour at the
station before proceeding to the INEC office.
“Before
proceeding to INEC, the gunmen drove to Aroma junction. They shot in the air
for about 10 minutes, making residents scamper for safety before they headed
down to INEC.”
Though the
source said he could not speak on causality figure, he added that there was the
likelihood of damage at both institutions and that the gunmen might have killed
people.
“I saw
flames of fire going up from the police station and INEC offices. But I cannot
say whether people were killed or not because I did not go closer,” said the
source.
When
contacted, Nkwachukwu Orji, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Anambra,
disclosed that he had received information on the attack but could not
officially comment on the matter.
“I need to
get a clear picture of what happened in my office before I can speak”, he said.
In the same
vein, the police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga explained that he was still making
contacts to understand the situation clearly.
