Kaduna In Total Darkness Over NLC Strike
Kaduna State is currently in total
darkness and this is as result the industrial action embarked upon by Nigerian
Labour Congress in the state, according to the Management of Kaduna Electric .
According to the management of
the Electric Distribution Company, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN has
knocked off all our 33KV lines in Kaduna State in compliance with NLC
directive.
“Consequently, we are appealing to
all communities, security agencies and vigilante groups to be vigilant so that
men of underworld will not cash in on the situation to vandalise power supply
installations. Any suspicious movement around distribution sub-stations
(transformers) or any other power supply infrastructure should be reported to
the relevant security agency,” the Head, Corporate Communication, AbdulAzeez
Abdullahi said in a statement.
“We have the collective
responsibility to protect these critical national assets in our
neighborhood,” he added.
The Nigerian Labour Congress in a
circular issued on May 11, called for industrial action and total shutdown of
socio-economic activities in Kaduna State communicating same to all affiliate
unions in the state.
This, according to the circular, is based on the decision of the National
Executive Council (NEC) of Congress at its regular meeting which took place on
April 22.
“This action is sequel to the
industrial tyranny which has been institutionalised by the Kaduna State
Governor, Mr. Nasir El-Rufai, especially as manifest in the recent mass sack
and casualisation of over 60 per cent of workers in the Kaduna civil and public
service,” NLC had said.
In the same vein, the National Union
of Electricity Employees directed its members to ensure total blackout in
Kaduna by 00 hours on Saturday, May 15 2021.
“You should liase with other States
and Regions through which Kaduna could be back fed to ensure that there is no
supply to Kaduna State.”
“Any Station or Officer whose unit
is found wanting, the Chapter or State Council will be sanctioned for anti
union activities,” NUEE threatened.
While the industrial action is
expected to fully begin tomorrow many of the residents of Kaduna State are
worried about the hardship it would cause for the ordinary citizens and private
businesses hoping that both parties would resort to dialogue.
