Liverpool agree world record fee for Van Dijk
Southampton
have confirmed they will sell Virgil Van Dijk to Liverpool for a world record
fee for a defender.
A statement on the Saints' club website read:
"Southampton Football Club can confirm it
has reached an agreement with Liverpool over the transfer of Virgil van Dijk.
Southampton have agreed a fee that will set a
new world-record for a defender. The club wishes Virgil well in his future when
the deal is completed on January 1st 2018."
The Netherlands international was expected to
move to Merseyside in the summer after handing in a transfer request.
However, his club refused to agree to the sale
and Liverpool were forced to publicly apologise for the way they pursued the
player's signature.
Van Dijk was re-integrated into the
Southampton squad in September but his formed has dipped and he was left out of
the last three matches.
If the deal is completed for £75m as planned,
it will shatter the world record fee for a defender currently set by Manchester
City's purchase of Benjamin Mendy for £52m.
Liverpool face
Everton at Anfield in the third round of the FA Cup on Friday, 5 January.
