Attorneys Shun NBA’s Order In Lagos, Abuja, Others
A large section of the membership of the Nigerian Bar
Association(NBA) has shunned an order to boycott the court.
The NBA’s NEC gave the directive that attorneys should shun
courts across the country in protest against the suspension of Justice Walter
Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria(CJN).
Onnoghen was suspended by President Buhari on Friday,
January 25th following an order by the Code of Conduct Tribunal(CCT) with
Justice Tanko Mohammed sworn in as CJN in acting capacity.
Most attorneys were seen going about their normal routine in
courts in Lagos, as they shunned the NBA’s directive. In Abuja, the Industrial
Court also sat with attorneys present.
The Damaturu Branch of the NBA also shunned the boycott as
it tagged the boycott of courts because of a case in court as a ‘deviation from
the tenets of the legal profession’.
Also in Ilorin and other branches of the NBA, attorneys were
seen in court as they also shunned the boycott order.
