THERE WAS A COUNTRY.....

●The Prophecy Of A Professor?Image result for Late Prof. Chinua Achebe

By  Desmond Ekwueme

The above title is the classic from the stable of Late Prof. Chinua Achebe. The political class dislikes this book, coinage and title like hell. They claim it has a divisive if not destructive intent on the polity. But the reality on ground today is that the Professor is fast becoming a prophet....to real historians.

The fears nursed or raised by Achebe in this book which sounded like a satire are manifesting....and increasingly regrettably so especially on the body of our politics
On the 24th of May, 2019 an SS2 Student of CSS Secondary School, Oroworokwu, Port Harcourt brought guns and grenade teargas for a "Class Fight" between SS2 Students and SS3 Students of same school.

Reports say while he was showing off these weapons to his classmates, he unknowingly detonated one of the grenade teargas and all hell were let loose. Pandemonium ensued as students jumped off three-storey buildings to escape. Many were hurt as the school's authority also scampered to safety.
Bottomline is the students are fast learning from what they see daily or betterstill what they saw during the election from their senior citizens/elders...most of whom could be their siblings, uncles and nephews....as thugs, fake police and fake soldiers or military personnel freely used these weapons to kill and maim innocent people before the very eyes of these students.

Truth is the boy or student who brought grenade teargas and guns to school got them from somewhere. Someone either gave them to him or he took them without permission from the custody of someone very close to him.

These are some of the weapons left in the hands of political thugs by high profile politicians who were desperate to win election at all cost....thereby turning Rivers State in general and Port Harcourt in particular into a war zone like we all witnessed in the last election.

During elections, desperate politicians bring in these weapons in large quantities and hand them over to their thugs with huge amount of money plus enough hard drugs to mobilise them. By the end of elections the weapons are left in the custody of these thugs who either lease them out to make money or use them personally for robbery and kidnapping among other vicious crimes.

Sadly, these criminals are passing these crimes unto our children in secondary schools. They are growing from street fighters to petty cult acts to cultism or cultists....onwards to militants....straight to political thuggery and then to terrorism and terrorists.

Before now, kidnapping was an alien culture or act in the northern part of our beloved country. But when kidnappers succeeded in abducting the district head of Daura, hometown of President Muhammadu Buhari, which was an international embarrassment, it dawned on us all that crime has taken a new and dreadful turn and twist in our country. No one is safe....and nowhere is safe!
Little kids who are known as Al-majiris because the elites failed to give them education ...but rather hand them plates to beg for daily bread....are now cheap recruits of terrorists. Ironically, the same elites who know that these criminals are terrorists and kidnappers....chose to ridiculously tag them BANDITS. This is the pain of a nation gradually slipping into the abyss..

The reality is dawning on us with each passing day....Late political sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo once said, "if the rich ignores the poor and fails to help the poor, one day, the children of the poor will rise up against the rich". We can only pray that our God-given country doesn't go the way her enemies want. We pray that we won't wake up one morning to say, THERE WAS A COUNTRY! (God forbid)
God bless Nigeria....
