Tribunal Reject Application to Serve Sanwo-Olu
The Lagos
state governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, today rejected
a request by the governorship candidates of the Alliance for Democracy (AD),
Chief Owolabi Salis, and his Labour Party counterpart, Prof. Ifagbemi Awamaridi,
in a motion ex-parte requesting the court to subpoena the governor of Lagos
state Mr.Babajide Sanwo-Olu to appear before the tribunal.
The tribunal
in its ruling said that Sanwo-Olu who is the seating governor of Lagos can not
be invited, subpoena or made to face any form of legal matter because of the
constitusional provisions which grants him immunity.
The tribunal,
however granted the petitioners request to subpoena the resident electoral
commissioner for Lagos state, 20 local government electoral officers, the state
returning officer, the commissioner of police and the Nigeria Army.
It will be
recall that following the orders of the court of appeal, the Lagos State
governorship Election Petition Tribunal yesterday resumed the hearing of two
petitions filed by governorship candidates of the Alliance for Democracy (AD),
Chief Owolabi Salis, and his Labour Party counterpart, Ifagbemi Awamaridi.
The tribunal
adjourns further proceedings to August 22,2019 for further hearing.
