#EndSARS: Police, Armed thugs Disperse Abuja Protesters with tear gas and Other Weapons
The
Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, warning against deployment of
force against peaceful protesters, seem to have been disobeyed as policemen on
Monday fired tear gas at #EndSARS campaigners in Abuja.
The armed policemen
violently dispersed protesters who massed around the busy Keffi-Abuja
Expressway around the Karu axis in the suburb of the nation’s capital.
The police
officers, who emerged from under the Karu Bridge, chased the protesters away
with horsewhips as they ran for cover in different directions.
A journalist
was said to have been assaulted by the policemen in the incident according to
reports.
Meanwhile, Clubs-wielding
thugs dispersed some of the protesters who shut down the Shehu Yar’Adua
Expressway leading to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
Our
correspondent reported that protesting youths have since morning barricaded the
road at Kuje, Soka and Airport Junctions, leaving motorists stranded.
At about
3pm, however, scores of armed thugs were seen running towards Kuje Junction.
Some protesters who were inside a Golf car alerted their colleagues of the
presence of the armed thugs.
Immediately
the announcement was made, the barricade was dismantled and stranded motorists
started finding their way out of the gridlock.
Our
correspondent did not see any other barricade from Kuje Junction to Dantata
Bridge.
However, the
protesters have shut down other major roads in Abuja, including the Apo road,
causing a massive traffic jam in the area.
Many
vehicles on the access roads have been turning back, thereby causing more
confusion and worsening the traffic situation.
Residents of
Lokogoma District are currently having a hectic time leaving their homes.
