Megan Rapinoe Hits Out At Man Utd Strong Club Decisions
Megan
Rapinoe, USA women’s football star has hit out at Manchester United over their
lack of investment into the women’s game.
Manchester United,
reintroduced a ladies team in 2018, winning the inaugural FA Women's
Championship title in their first year.
They are now
a regular Women's Super League (WSL) side, and finished fourth last season
after bumping up their resources into that area of the club.
But World
Cup and Olympic champion Rapinoe has lashed out at United for taking so long to
put together an elite women’s team again.
The
35-year-old insists a club like the Red Devils have acted “disgracefully” in
neglecting having a ladies side for so many years.
"I
think women's football in England is the same as in America - it is so far
behind because of what we've had to overcome in the lack of investment,” she
told the BBC.
"It's
2020. How long has the Premier League been around? And we're only just seeing a
club like Manchester United put effort and pounds towards a women's team?
Frankly, it's disgraceful.” Rapinoe now has
168 caps for the USA to her name, and has appeared in three World Cups. But the
OL Reign star insists she has no plans to retire yet.
"I've
had a few team-mates go abroad and play, while I'm training and trying to keep
fit in the hopes that eventually we'll be out of this hellscape,” Rapinoe
added.
"I want
to keep playing. I'm definitely not anywhere near retirement - I absolutely
want to play at the Olympics.
"After
the Olympics I'll have to take a longer look at the next three years. We're a
year closer to the next World Cup and it's pretty enticing. We'll leave that
one out in the open…"
