Obey Court Orders, African Lawyers Tells African Leaders.
African
lawyers under the banner of African Bar Association, (AFBA) have called on African
leaders to obey the rule of law and court orders.
The lawyers
have also called on member countries of the Economic Communities of West
African State (ECOWAS] to sanction Cape Varde for refusing to obey an order of
the ECOWAS Court.
Addressing a
news conference in Lagos to herald the 21st annual conference of the association
set for October 3 to 7th, at the scenic hospitality monument, Mahatma Ghandi
International Conference Centre, Niamey, Republic of Niger.
President of
the Association, Hannibal Uwaifo Esq said, the deliberate refusal of African to
obey court orders is not a good and does not set good precedence for good governance.
The continuous
refusal of the Cape Varde government to obey the orders of a court that it has
interest in with a Cape Varde Judge also seating on the matter is wrong.
Maintaining that the person been held is a diplomat who is protected by
international law.
Speaking
further on the conference, while Unveiling the thrust of the Summit,
"Accountable Governance as a panacea for unending conflicts in Africa; The
Legal Profession as the driver", Mr.
Uwaifo Esq said, "the conversations in Niamey will be epochal, the
attendance asset determined, and networking value added because Africa's peers
will gather to insist, that leadership in our countries must constantly
self-evaluate to deepen accountable governance and the rule of law, as a more
prosperous standard of growth and development.
The
Conference will bring together high-end experts and participants from all arms
of government, the Academia, Security, Business policy makers and influencers
with global reputation to discuss and proffer actionable solutions to myriads
of challenges facing the continent.
The keynote
speaker is Nobel Laurette Dr Dennis Mukwege of Democratic Republic of Congo, and
will be graced with the presences of host President of Niger Republic,
President Mohammed Bazoun as Special guest, and his immediate predecessor, Mr
Mohamadou Issoffou
Africa's inspirational
icons of leadership that will be celebrated during the conference includes
Nigeria's former president Goodluck Jonathan, who is also deliver a paper at
the occasion, Mrs Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Mr Ernest Koroma of Sierra
Leone, all past presidents of their countries, who have earned the flag of
African good governance Ambassadors.
