FG Moves to Digitise Nigeria’s Addressing System

 

The Federal Government has taken steps towards developing a fully digitised and modern addressing system for Nigeria, with the National Addressing Council ratifying a preliminary framework for the initiative.

The decision was reached at a meeting of the council in Abuja on Monday, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima and attended by representatives of key government agencies and stakeholders from the public and private sectors. 

The proposed system is expected to provide a more coordinated approach to addressing across the country, potentially improving how homes, businesses and other locations are identified and accessed.

The government believes a reliable national addressing system could have implications beyond postal services. Accurate location information is important for emergency response, security operations, logistics, financial services, urban planning and the delivery of public services.

For businesses, a digitised addressing framework could also make it easier to verify customers' locations and deliver goods and services, particularly as Nigeria's digital economy continues to expand.

The move is coming at a time when many Nigerian communities still operate with informal descriptions of locations, including landmarks, nearby buildings and traditional area names. Such arrangements can make navigation and service delivery difficult, especially for people unfamiliar with an area.

A modern national addressing system could therefore help bridge some of these gaps by creating more consistent and accessible location information.

The initiative will require effective coordination among federal and state institutions, local authorities, telecommunications companies, technology providers and other stakeholders.

It will also require attention to data protection and accuracy, particularly if information about individuals, households and businesses is incorporated into digital addressing databases.

The Federal Government's move represents an attempt to modernise an important but often overlooked part of Nigeria's infrastructure. If successfully implemented, a reliable digital addressing system could become an important foundation for more efficient public administration and private-sector services.
