MTN Nigeria Marks 25 Years, Connects 90m Nigerians

MTN Nigeria has marked 25 years of commercial operations in the country, highlighting its contribution to the transformation of Nigeria's telecommunications sector and the expansion of digital connectivity across the country.

The telecommunications company, which commenced commercial operations in 2001, said it had grown from a pioneering GSM operator into a major digital services provider connecting more than 90 million people.

The milestone represents a significant transformation from the early years of mobile telecommunications in Nigeria, when access to telephone services was limited and obtaining a fixed telephone line was difficult for many Nigerians.

MTN's entry into the Nigerian market coincided with the liberalisation of the telecommunications sector and the expansion of GSM services, helping to make mobile communication accessible to millions of Nigerians who previously had limited access to telecommunications services.

Over the past 25 years, the company has expanded beyond voice calls into mobile data, digital financial services, enterprise solutions and other technology-driven services.

The company said its network and digital infrastructure now support millions of Nigerians in areas including education, commerce, financial transactions, entertainment and communication.

MTN Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, said the company's journey had been shaped by continuous investment, innovation and a commitment to expanding connectivity across the country.

According to the company, its growth has also contributed to the development of Nigeria's wider digital economy by supporting businesses, entrepreneurs and other users who depend on telecommunications infrastructure for their activities.

The company's evolution has coincided with the dramatic growth of Nigeria's telecommunications industry. Mobile connectivity has become an essential part of everyday life, with Nigerians increasingly relying on mobile networks for banking, business transactions, education, social interaction and access to information.

MTN's 25-year journey has, however, also been marked by regulatory challenges and significant financial obligations to government. The company has faced regulatory sanctions, including the major fine imposed over SIM registration violations, while continuing to invest heavily in network expansion and infrastructure.

Beyond its core telecommunications operations, MTN has also invested in education and media development initiatives through the MTN Foundation and its Media Innovation Programme, among other social investment projects.

The company's 2026 Media Innovation Programme admitted 25 fellows, an increase from 20 in previous editions, with the expansion linked to its 25th anniversary and its stated commitment to supporting Nigeria's media ecosystem.

As MTN Nigeria begins its next chapter, the company is expected to face a telecommunications environment increasingly defined by data consumption, artificial intelligence, digital financial services and the need for faster and more reliable connectivity.

The anniversary therefore provides an opportunity not only to reflect on the company's growth but also on the broader transformation of Nigeria's telecommunications industry, which has become one of the critical pillars of the country's digital economy.
