Nigerians in Diaspora Gather in Canada for Investment
Nigerians in the diaspora, investors, policymakers and business leaders have converged in Canada for the 2026 Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference, aimed at strengthening investment and economic ties between Nigerians abroad and the home country.
The conference, which begins in Toronto on Tuesday and runs until August 15, is being held under the theme, “Invest Nigeria; Thrive Abroad.”
The event is expected to provide a platform for participants to examine practical ways of mobilising diaspora capital and directing it towards productive sectors of the Nigerian economy.
Organisers said the conference would bring together members of the Nigerian diaspora, entrepreneurs, investors and policymakers to explore opportunities in areas including capital markets, technology, entrepreneurship and economic development.
The gathering comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to attract more private capital and deepen investment as the government implements economic reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and improving long-term growth.
For Nigeria, the diaspora represents an important source of foreign exchange, investment, expertise and international business connections. Increased participation by Nigerians living abroad could therefore provide additional opportunities for domestic businesses seeking access to global markets and financing.
The conference is also expected to examine how Nigeria's capital market can be positioned to attract greater participation from Nigerians abroad, particularly through investment products that allow diaspora investors to participate directly in the country's economic growth.
Participants are expected to discuss ways of converting diaspora interest in Nigeria into sustainable investments capable of creating jobs, supporting businesses and strengthening economic development.
The Toronto meeting therefore comes at a significant time for Nigeria, with policymakers under pressure to translate economic reforms into broader opportunities for citizens while attracting the investment needed to accelerate growth.
Organisers hope the conference will produce practical partnerships and investment commitments that can strengthen the relationship between Nigeria and its large and economically influential diaspora community.
