Aig-Imoukhuede At 60: ‘Still Building’.
In a personal message shared on LinkedIn, the banker, investor and philanthropist expressed gratitude to God for life, family, friendships and the opportunity to live a purposeful life.
“Today, I turn 60,” he wrote. “I receive this milestone with profound gratitude to God, for life, for grace, for family, for friendship, and for the privilege of purpose.”
Looking back at his journey, Aig-Imoukhuede identified one idea that has consistently shaped his career and public service: building institutions, people and opportunities capable of outliving individuals.
“To build institutions. To build people. To build opportunities. To help build a stronger Africa,” he said.
That philosophy has been evident throughout his career. As Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank between 2002 and 2013, he led the transformation of the bank from a relatively small institution into one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions. He returned to the organisation in March 2024 as Chairman of Access Holdings following the death of his longtime business partner, Herbert Wigwe.
Beyond banking, Aig-Imoukhuede has remained active in financial-market development, philanthropy and public-sector reform. He chairs EnterpriseNGR and Coronation Group and co-founded the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation with his wife, Ofovwe. Through the foundation and its initiatives, he has focused on developing future public-sector leaders, improving government effectiveness and expanding access to quality primary healthcare.
He acknowledged that his achievements were never the work of one person, expressing appreciation to his wife, children, family, friends, colleagues, mentors and partners who supported and challenged him throughout the journey.
He also paid tribute to his late mother, Pastor Emily, and Herbert Wigwe, whose memory remains significant to his story.
Recalling his 50th birthday, when he described himself as “God’s Work in Progress”, Aig-Imoukhuede said the description still applied a decade later.
“The building continues,” he declared.
His 60th birthday, therefore, is not being presented as an endpoint but as the beginning of another decade of purposeful work. He said his prayer was for greater grace, wisdom and strength to build more intentionally and generously.
Aig-Imoukhuede, who has received national and international recognition for his contributions to banking, finance and institution-building, was honoured with the African Banker Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024.
As he enters his seventh decade, his stated ambition remains centred on stronger institutions, wider opportunities and transformed lives.
“Sixty years. Deeply thankful. Still building,” he concluded.
“To God be all the glory.”
