Nigeria’s Power Generation Climbs To 5,403MW, Nears Record

 

Nigeria's available electricity generation has risen to 5,403.3 megawatts, bringing the country's power sector closer to its historic peak.

The latest figure represents a significant improvement in available generation capacity and comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to address the country's long-standing electricity supply challenges.

Data reported on Thursday showed that available generation had reached 5,403.3MW, compared with Nigeria's all-time peak of 5,801.84MW recorded in March 2025.

The increase is significant for households and businesses that have continued to depend heavily on alternative sources of electricity because of unreliable grid supply.

However, higher generation does not automatically translate into equivalent electricity delivered to consumers, as transmission and distribution constraints remain important parts of Nigeria's power-sector challenge.

The development comes amid wider government efforts to improve the country's electricity infrastructure, including ongoing investments in generation, transmission and distribution.

The Federal Government has also been engaging international partners, including China, over cooperation aimed at improving power supply and infrastructure.

The latest increase in available generation therefore offers some positive movement in the sector, although sustained improvement will depend on the ability of the transmission and distribution networks to absorb and deliver additional power to consumers.
