Carrick, Fernandes Reconcile as Man Utd Face Chelsea Test

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes have held clear-the-air talks following their recent disagreement, with the pair expected to refocus on the club’s troubled season ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea.

The meeting took place at United’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday, following growing tensions over the team’s tactics and poor performances. According to reports by Sky Sports and BBC Sport, the discussions were frank, with Carrick satisfied that the animosity between them had eased. However, it remains unclear whether Fernandes apologised for his public criticism of the coach.

Fernandes, 32, was an unused substitute during United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday. His omission followed comments questioning the team’s tactical approach after their 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como. Carrick subsequently explained that his decision to drop the Portuguese midfielder was based on “pure football” considerations, insisting that team selection was intended to produce the desired performance.

The reconciliation comes as Carrick faces mounting pressure following United’s disappointing run of results. Sunday’s defeat extended their winless streak to eight matches in all competitions and left them 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone. Despite discussions among senior club officials about his position, Carrick has been given another opportunity to turn the situation around against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Fernandes is now expected to be available for selection on Saturday, although his return to the starting line-up has not been officially confirmed. Reports from Carrington suggest the midfielder has returned to training in good condition after a difficult period, raising hopes that he could play a significant role in the crucial encounter.

The individual meeting was accompanied by a wider discussion involving United’s players and staff, during which the need for immediate improvement was emphasised. The squad reportedly acknowledged that responsibility for the club’s struggles extended beyond the coach and involved underperformance across the team.

United have also received a boost with midfielder Kobbie Mainoo returning to training after an injury layoff. Carrick will hope the renewed determination within the squad translates into results against Chelsea, as he seeks to restore confidence and ease pressure on his position.
