Gunmen Kill One, Injure Seven Plateau Traders

Gunmen have killed one person and injured seven others after opening fire on a vehicle conveying traders returning from the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack occurred on Sunday evening along the Bukuru Expressway as the traders travelled towards Bassa Local Government Area. Sources said the gunmen opened fire on the vehicle around the Total Filling Station, Yelwa Club Junction, Bukuru.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the shooting on Monday, saying preliminary investigations indicated that the attackers targeted the vehicle conveying the traders.

The injured victims were taken for medical treatment, while security agencies began efforts to identify the attackers and determine their motive. The police said tactical and anti-robbery teams had been deployed and intelligence gathering intensified following the attack.

The incident has generated renewed concern over the safety of traders and herders using the Kara Bukuru market route, which has witnessed similar attacks in the past.

The Plateau State chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Ibrahim Babayo, condemned the attack and called on the Police, Operation Safe Haven, the Department of State Services and other security agencies to strengthen surveillance along the route.

Babayo also appealed to members of the association and other residents to remain calm and avoid retaliatory attacks, stressing that no Nigerian should be targeted because of ethnicity or occupation.

The latest attack has further heightened security concerns in Plateau State, where recurring violence involving communities, farmers, herders and criminal groups has continued to threaten lives and livelihoods
