US Disciplinary Records Name 17 Nigerian Lawyers, Deportation Claims Unverified

At least 17 Nigerian lawyers who practised in the United States have faced disciplinary sanctions, including disbarment and suspension, over professional misconduct ranging from mishandling clients’ funds to dishonesty and practising law while suspended.

The cases, spanning several years, involved decisions by state courts, professional disciplinary bodies and US immigration authorities. The names were compiled in reports published in September 2026.

Among those named are Alexander Osondu Akpodiete, Taiwo A. Agbaje, Cyril O. Chukwurah, Wilfred I. Aka, Ignatius Chukwuemeka Udeani and John Udo.

Their disciplinary histories vary. Some were disbarred by state courts following findings of professional misconduct, while others were barred from appearing before US immigration courts and related federal agencies.

The cases include findings involving unauthorised handling of clients’ money, failure to refund unearned legal fees, misleading statements and unauthorised legal practice. Some also involved criminal convictions.

However, claims circulating online that all 17 lawyers are awaiting deportation to Nigeria have not been substantiated by the available reports or official records reviewed.

Disbarment or suspension from legal practice does not, by itself, establish that a person is subject to deportation. Immigration proceedings and professional disciplinary cases are separate legal processes.

The US Department of Justice maintains an official register of practitioners currently disciplined before its Executive Office for Immigration Review, with records available for checking individual cases.

The distinction is important to ensure that professional sanctions are not wrongly presented as proof of pending deportation proceedings.
