DEMOCRATS SEIZE US CONGRESS IN MAJOR MIDTERM UPSET

Democrats have taken control of both chambers of the United States Congress following sweeping victories in Tuesday's midterm elections, dealing President Donald Trump a major political setback halfway through his second term.

The Democratic Party secured control of the Senate and House of Representatives after defeating several Republican candidates in states that have traditionally supported the Republican Party.

The outcome represents a significant shift in the balance of power in Washington and is expected to complicate Trump's legislative agenda during the remaining two years of his presidency.

According to preliminary results, Democrats flipped several Republican-held Senate seats, including contests in Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The results also reflected growing voter concerns over the cost of living, the administration's economic policies and public dissatisfaction with its handling of domestic and international affairs.

The victories are expected to give Democrats greater influence over congressional investigations, legislative proceedings and oversight of the Trump administration.

The new congressional majority could also complicate the confirmation of presidential nominees and create fresh challenges for the White House in implementing its policies.

Trump's party now faces renewed pressure to reassess its political strategy ahead of the 2028 presidential election, while Democrats will be expected to demonstrate how they intend to use their newly acquired congressional influence.

Although some contests remain subject to final counting and certification, the midterm results represent a significant development in American politics and a major test of Trump's leadership.
