20 Abducted Corps Members Regain Freedom in Imo
Twenty prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who were abducted by gunmen in Imo State while travelling to their orientation camps, have regained their freedom.
The victims were reportedly travelling from Ibadan to different orientation camps when their vehicles were attacked along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in the Umunoha area of Imo State on October 1.
Governor Hope Uzodimma confirmed their release on Wednesday, commending security agencies and the Oyo State Government for their roles in securing the freedom of the prospective corps members.
The rescue followed a joint security operation involving the military, the Department of State Services, the police and other security agencies. The victims were subsequently taken for medical attention and assessment following their ordeal.
The abduction had raised fresh concerns about the safety of travellers on major highways, particularly young Nigerians travelling to fulfil their national service obligations. It also renewed calls for stronger security measures along vulnerable routes.
Although the victims have regained their freedom, questions remain about the circumstances surrounding their abduction and rescue. Authorities have not publicly provided a comprehensive account of how the operation was concluded or whether any ransom was paid.
Security agencies are expected to continue efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. The incident has once again highlighted the need for effective intelligence gathering, coordinated security operations and sustained protection of travellers on Nigeria's highways.
