Ex-Delta Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies at 71

Former Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has died at 71, three days before his 72nd birthday.

His death was announced on Monday, October 19, in a statement signed by his son, Toju Anire Uduaghan, on behalf of the family. The family said he died that morning, describing him as a beloved patriarch whose life and public service touched many people across Delta State and Nigeria.

A medical doctor by training, Uduaghan served as Delta State Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007 before becoming governor.

He led the state from 2007 to 2015, serving two terms. However, his first election victory was challenged in court and annulled, leading to a rerun in January 2011 before he won another governorship election in April that year.

During his tenure, his administration pursued health and infrastructure programmes, including free maternal and under-five healthcare. His record in office remains part of the broader assessment of his years in public service.

The family described his death as a profound loss and expressed gratitude for his life and service. It also extended condolences to relatives, friends, associates, former colleagues and others mourning him.

Uduaghan’s death comes as Delta State and the wider Nigerian political community remember a former governor whose career spanned medicine, public administration and elective politics.
