FG Releases Eight Months' Salary Arrears to SSANU Members

The Federal Government has released eight months' salary arrears owed to members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), following the union's warning of possible industrial action.

The development represents progress in efforts to resolve outstanding payments affecting senior non-teaching staff in federal universities. The union had raised concerns over unpaid entitlements and issued an ultimatum to the government.

SSANU's demand formed part of a wider dispute over the implementation of agreements between university-based unions and the Federal Government, with workers pressing for the settlement of outstanding financial obligations.

The release of the arrears is expected to ease tensions between the government and the union and reduce the immediate threat of a disruption to administrative and other non-teaching services in public universities.

However, the payment may not resolve all the issues surrounding the dispute. The union has also drawn attention to other outstanding entitlements, including withheld salaries associated with the 2022 industrial action and arrears relating to salary increases.

The development highlights the continuing challenges facing Nigeria's public university system, where disagreements over funding, staff welfare and the implementation of agreements have repeatedly threatened industrial harmony.

For university workers, the immediate priority will be to confirm that the released funds reach eligible beneficiaries and that outstanding payments are addressed according to agreed timelines.

The Federal Government's handling of the remaining demands will be important in determining whether the latest development produces lasting industrial peace or merely postpones another round of negotiations.
