Solskjaer tips Greenwood to replace Lukaku
Ole Gunnar
Solskjaer has backed Mason Greenwood to fill the void left by Romelu Lukaku at
Old Trafford.
The Belgian
completed a £74million move to Inter Milan on Thursday to end his two-year
stint at the Theatre of Dreams.
Lukaku
bagged 28 goals in his first season in the north-west and was the club’s second
top scorer last term with 15 goals, despite suffering an indifferent campaign.
United
failed to sign a replacement for Lukaku following his move to Italy and fans
are understandably worried about replacing the Belgian’s goals.
However,
Solskjaer believes Greenwood can make the step up following his promotion into
the first team squad.
‘Of course
Rom [Lukaku] has a good record and stats he’s one of the top number nines around
when you wanna play with that kind of striker, target man,’ admitted Solskjaer.
‘For me I’m
very confident that we’ll get goals from Martial, Rashford, James will create,
I’m sure Jesse Lingard will get more. We have a different attacking set-up this
month.
‘Towards the end of last season we didn’t
score a lot of goals and you do think players will have an impact and Mason
Greenwood pathway would have been a lot more different if we had another
forward there and I believe Mason is going to be playing and involved a lot and
when he is he’s going to score goals.’
Greenwood is
likely to start on the bench for Sunday’s opener against Chelsea at Old
Trafford. Paul Pogba has been passed fit after missing last Saturday’s friendly
against AC Milan, while Harry Maguire is fit to make his debut for the club
following his £80m arrival.
